Breathing, heart beat, cell metabolism, kidney function, and even thinking and dreaming uses calories. Muscle cells use calories even when at rest. Those 1,000 of not so Easy weight loss calories diets recommended by many a doctor in my former fat days were crawling with nutritional deficiencies and served more to slow down my metabolism than to strengthen it - as well as my body.
It makes no sense for the systems of your body to raise your metabolism
(by adding muscle) when you are not getting enough calories; that way
starvation lies. So no, you are probably not going to burn fat to get
the calories to build a lot of muscle, even if you aren't at extremely
low body fat.
Losing muscle will make it harder to lose body fat due to a
decreased metabolism. If you consume less calories and exercise you
will gradually burn what you want to get rid of - body fat. People who
are sufficiently motivated will lose weight if they reduce their
calorie intake below their normal daily requirement and increase their
metabolic rate through exercise. This forces the body to burn fat as
stored energy to fill the gap. While some people give anecdotal
evidence that these programs are very effective, there isn?t
significant scientific evidence to suggest that these programs actually
change your metabolic rate.
